What is a Waterfall Shower?
First things first, we should really address what a waterfall shower is.
The moniker is, of course, rather self-explanatory. But if you were expecting a mountainous backdrop for your shower stream, I admire your ambition, but you’ll end up disappointed.
Essentially, waterfall shower heads or rain shower heads deliver a stream or flow of water akin to that provided by a natural waterfall.
The deluge of water, how it is distributed and at what volume makes for a sensational showering experience for the user.
There’s plenty of different forms of waterfall shower as well.
Many of our one-outlet shower systems incorporate waterfall shower heads. Similarly Similarly so, rain shower heads are featured components within our two-outlet showers and three-outlet shower kits.
And our selection of modern shower panels tend to include waterfall shower heads too. Or, at the very least the functionality to provide a waterfall effect water flow.
All in all, there’s plenty of choice if you want to enjoy the many advantages of a waterfall shower. Finding the right design to suit your space shouldn’t be a problem with such a super-stylish array of models on the market.
You can bring a touch of spa-like class to your very own home with your fancied waterfall shower design.
How do Waterfall Showers work?
Waterfalls naturally provide a whole host of different water effects based on several factors. So why shouldn’t that be replicated by a waterfall shower system?
The way waterfall showers work will depend on which type you opt for, though, as opposed to natural elements.
If you install a traditional shower system with a waterfall shower head, there’ll usually be accompanying handles to control water flow and temperature.
With shower panels including an in-built rain shower head, the controls will typically be attached to the all-in-one panel.
And often, shower panels will afford a greater level of control with regards to how the water stream is distributed. Many designs offer several settings or modes for the adjustment of water volume, and the frequency with which it emits.
Of course, the style of your waterfall shower head will influence what sort of stream it delivers too.
Expect voluminous bursts from the likes of in-built waterblades – a common feature of many contemporary shower panels.
With round or square waterfall shower heads, a different sort of flow is more common. Small circular nozzles frequently populate rain shower heads, distributing a more streamlined rainfall effect water stream as such.
An understated, relaxing trickle. A splashtastic, refreshing torrent. Or something in between? It’s up to you!

Streamlined designer style is a dominant feature of the Interval Concealed Thermostatic Shower Panel with Waterfall Head. The specific rain shower head included here offers a choice of waterfall functions.
The rectangular waterfall shower head incorporates a waterblade, so powerful and voluminous streams are available, literally, on tap.
100 silicone nozzles populate the showerhead as well. Positioned marginally above the waterblade, this multitude of diminutive round nozzles deliver a rainfall effect either simultaneously with, or separate from, the waterblade.
You can enjoy the best of both worlds from this rain shower head therefore. And the concealed panel section of the component also features in-built body jets to further enhance the user’s showering experience.
Each outlet is operational in cohesion or can work on their own.

Eclipse Thermostatic Brushed Nickel Shower System with Waterfall Shower Head
The Eclipse Thermostatic Brushed Nickel Shower System with Waterfall Shower Head features an ultra-thin rain shower head.
It’s also another system that teams a waterblade and miniature silicone nozzles for an all-encompassing waterfall shower experience.
Minimalist in terms of design, the waterfall shower system doesn’t compromise at all with regards to performance. The narrow nozzles provide an especially fine rainfall stream for a relaxing patter.
Aesthetics-wise, the waterfall shower system is also available in chrome, so you can opt for the finish that best suits your existing bathroom decor.
Arcadia Thermostatic Shower System with Waterfall Head and Handshower
Similar in style to the aforementioned Eclipse option. However, the Arcadia Thermostatic Shower System with Waterfall Head and Handshower also includes a shower wand or hand shower for extra functionality. Perfect for anyone in search of a rain shower head with wand.
The system incorporates a nearly identical waterfall shower head to the Eclipse version. And, like all previously mentioned rain shower heads in this article, features both a waterblade and multiple silicone nozzles for the delivery of two distinct types of water stream.
As a waterfall shower head with handheld, it can arguably offer an even more well-rounded showering experience than some counterparts.
The accompanying hand shower is operational at the same time as the waterfall shower head, depending on user preference. It provides excellent versatility in terms of a targeted shower. Users can zone in on specific areas, with the shower wand aiding in alleviating any aches and pains.

The included body jets are easily adjustable meanwhile. They can therefore target specific areas of the body to ease away any aches and pains the user may have. And despite their minute profile, the body sprays certainly pack a punch. Each individual body jet incorporates 16 nozzles for a strong and consistent water jet projection.
How much does a Waterfall Shower cost?
Now we’ve looked at some of the better options on the market, we can examine how much a waterfall shower will cost.
As the contrasting prices of the detailed products show, there can be significant variety in the overall cost of waterfall showers.
Indeed, of the six waterfall shower systems we’ve highlighted, prices range between less than $200 and just under $900.
Obviously, the modern, feature-laden waterfall shower system designs will tend to prove more expensive than more traditional options in the main.
An ultra-contemporary shower panel is at the pinnacle of the price spectrum with regards to the specific products mentioned in this article. And it is little wonder, considering the presence of a multi-functional waterfall shower head, in-built body jets and a shower wand to give just a brief overview.
By contrast, an older model is the cheapest of those to be placed under the spotlight here. Despit looking like nothing else out there, the Cloudburst waterfall shower head retails for just $189.95. Of course, it’s a lot less of an ‘all singing, all dancing’ option in comparison with some counterparts. Yet it offers a unique aesthetic for fancied interior designers to work with, and provides the competent delivery of a refreshing rainfall effect flow.
That said, you don’t need a monumental budget to be able to enjoy the many benefits of a waterfall shower. But if you can stretch to a higher outlay, there are plenty of luxury, multi-functional options to suit too.
Be wary, though, that waterfall shower installation costs can also vary, depending on what type of system you opt for. You can gain an idea which type of waterfall shower installations will cost more in the following section…
Waterfall Shower Installation Options
Waterfall showers come in many forms. And as such, there are several different kinds of waterfall shower installation options. Our top tips for installing waterfall or rain shower heads will help you understand how to fit a waterfall shower. They’ll also provide an indication as to the most expensive types of waterfall shower installation.
Installing a Ceiling Mounted Waterfall Shower
Many people see ceiling mounted waterfall showers as the perfect design for their purpose. In addition to the stylishly streamlined aesthetic, they represent an attractive proposition purely from a physics perspective.
Some waterfall shower heads are too heavy to be adequately held in place by a shower arm. Plus, a waterfall shower head emerging from the ceiling probably provides the closest sensation to a natural waterfall as is possible. Most other rain shower head installations will occur at a slight angle at the very least.
It’s much easier to commence with a ceiling mounted waterfall shower installation in a new bathroom. Or, one in which a full-scale refurbishment is taking place. The plumbing within the walls needs to be exposed, and the hot and cold water lines extended to the ceiling.
Those with DIY experience can potentially complete the work – it is significantly more challenging than a simple faucet fitting, however. It is therefore recommended to enlist professional plumbing services for a waterfall shower installation into the ceiling.
Given the nature of the invasive plumbing work required, this type of waterfall shower installation can often be more expensive than other kinds.
Installing a Wall Mounted Waterfall Shower
If the purchase and installation costs of a ceiling mounted shower are overburdening in relation to your budget, fear not. A wall mounted waterfall shower negates the need for supply lines to be extended to the ceiling, all but guaranteeing a lower installation cost.
First things first – you need to select the right shower arm for your enclosure.
To begin with, measure the height of your existing shower arm, from the floor leading up to the arm’s center. And consider the height of the tallest person who’ll regularly use the waterfall shower.
Obviously, the rain shower head will need to be fitted a minimum of a few inches higher than the height of the tallest user.
So, assess the difference in height between the existing shower arm and where the new head would have to be comfortably positioned. That distance represents how far the new shower arm must be able to extend vertically.
Once this has been determined, think about where you tend to stand in your shower enclosure. And the angle at which you want the water to emerge.
For the most realistic waterfall shower experience, rain shower heads are designed to spray directly downwards from an overhead postiion. However, they can also operate with great effect at a 45° angle. Just make sure you opt for a shower arm that extends an adequate distance from the front wall.
The majority of waterfall showers provide either a smooth and voluminous stream of water, or a refined rainfall effect. In some instances, both. To enjoy each flow to their full potential, choosing the correct shower arm is imperative.
A relatively small shower arm, such as a 6-inch version for instance, would likely not offer a significant enough support to enable the waterfall shower head to work to maximum effect. Positioned at an angle, the rainfall shower might necessitate the user standing nearer to the head to enjoy the experience to the full extent.
That’s what makes it so important to select a shower arm long enough for all users to properly enjoy the waterfall deluge. In selecting a longer shower arm, you’ll be able to tilt the showerhead in a straighter fashion, and stand at a more comfortable distance away from the head and front wall.
Whilst there may be more initial considerations to make ahead of purchase, wall mounted waterfall shower installations require less invasive plumbing work usually. As a result, they tend to be cheaper to fit than their ceiling-mounted counterparts.
Different Styles of Wall Mounted Waterfall Showers
There’s many different styles of wall mounted waterfall showers. So don’t be hasty in identifying the right shower arms to enhance your shower enclosure. Following is an insight into the different designs available…
Adjustable Shower Arms
Adjustable shower arms are ideal for providing an extra level of flexibility and further reach. Many models offer both height and adjustment from the base and angle adjustment at the head so all users can position them appropriate to their height and frame.
Some adjustable shower arms also incorporate a swivel feature. This only adds to the level of versatility they provide.
S-Shaped Shower Arms
Another popular pick are S-shaped shower arms. These assist in elevating the waterfall shower head a few inches, resulting in a 45° waterfall shower outlet. However, depending on what type of rain shower head you select, it may be adjustable to a different angle.
Bear in mind with these models that they don’t usually extend very far from the wall. Around 10 inches is the norm. So if you prefer to stand further away from the stream or are particularly tall, S-shaped shower arms might not be a preferable choice.
Extended Shower Arms
Extended shower arms will prove a suitable selection for many waterfall shower buyers too. These models emerge at 10 inches or more from the wall, with some versions protruding much further.
Usually, extended shower arms will culminate in a 90° curve, delivering the most similar effect possible to a ceiling installation. Considering the length of this type of shower arm, it is advisable to fit them alongside a ceiling support. A drop ear elbow could also be required. There’s more on that below…
Drop Ear Elbow Shower Arms
In order to complete the most secure type of shower arm installation, a drop ear elbow will be required. This will sit behind the wall, holding the nipple which in turn holds the shower arm.
Without a drop ear elbow, the weight of larger waterfall shower heads could cause a breakage of the shower arm or nipple.
Professionally installed showers are likely to boast a fitting of this type already. They are placed on a backer board, alleviating the level of stress the waterfall shower head, arm and nipple put on the connected piping.
How to Install a Waterfall Shower
As we highly recommend using a professional plumber for ceiling installations, we’ll focus on a wall-mounted waterfall shower installation for our chief example. These are also the most popular type of waterfall shower fitting.
Step 1
Measure the height of your current shower head from the bathroom ceiling. Waterfall shower heads necessitate an extra two to three inches of head height in comparison with standard shower heads.
Step 2
Double check that there is a comfortable level of space between the user and the shower head. Also, remove any shower accessories such as soap dishes or shower caddies to allow for a clear pathway between the water flow and the user.
Step 3
Work out what water pressure is needed for your new waterfall shower head. Larger rain shower heads will offer a lesser outlet pressure than smaller versions. If necessary, invest in an accompanying shower pump to enhance pressure, and achieve the waterfall effect flow you crave.
Step 4
If your existing shower system is wall mounted, but offers the right amount of clearance, it is easy to swap. Remove the current shower head to begin with. If the installation wasn’t completed an age ago, this process could be as simple as unscrewing a bolt.
Should that not be the case, then the use of an adjustable wrench may be required. However, be careful not to be too robust so as not to damage the piping. Thoroughly clean the pipes to rid them of any dust, dirt or limescale deposits. Leave the pipe to dry out before attaching your new waterfall shower head. If necessary, use the wrench, but tighten the new shower head by hand.
Step 5
Fit the shower arm to the wall at the appropriate height, and attach your new rain shower head. Switch the water supply on to make sure it has been installed properly. If water does leak, tighten the waterfall shower head attachment by hand until the dripping ceases.
