Cleaning the bathroom is never a fun task, but by avoiding these six common bathroom cleaning mistakes and following our top tips you can get the job done efficiently and effectively.
Using one cleaning product for everything
Most of us think that using just one product such as a disinfecting wipe to clean each and every area is sufficient, but the different items in your bathroom ideally require their own cleaning product. So, make sure to use one cleaning product for the bath tub, basin and tiles, but use a glass cleaner for mirrors and shower doors to ensure better results.
Not switching on the exhaust fan often enough
Don’t forget to switch on the exhaust fan before you get in the shower to help prevent mildew and mold from forming, and to remove moisture in the air. Plus, remember to leave it running for approximately 15 to 20 minutes after you’ve finished using the bathroom. If you don’t have a fan, open the window to let the steam out. After each shower you can also use a squeegee to remove any extra moisture.
Not washing the shower curtain liner
If a residue has built-up on the shower curtain liner it doesn’t mean that you have to throw it out. All you need to do is wash it in the washing machine on a delicate cycle with some old towels and a small amount of bleach. Then, put it in the tumble dryer on low for just a few minutes. After each shower get into the habit of pulling the shower curtain closed to prevent the growth of mildew and mold.
Putting the toilet brush straight back into the holder
Putting the toilet brush straight back into the holder when it’s still wet creates a breeding ground for bacteria. So, after you’ve cleaned the toilet bowl, place the brush across the seat and let it drip into the bowl. Before putting the brush back into the holder make sure it’s completely dry. Spray or soak the toilet brush and holder with an antibacterial cleaner, then rinse and dry to keep them fresher.
Only cleaning inside the toilet
It’s not just the inside of the toilet and the seat that needs cleaning; the outside of it does too. The exterior of the toilet can easily get dusty and grimy, so clean the base, tank and lid, as well as the flush handle or button.
Forgetting about the smaller details
The small details can easily be forgotten in your bathroom. Items such as shelves, faucets and handles should be cleaned on a regular basis. Bathroom accessories including soap dishes and toothbrush holders can be washed in warm soapy water and then dried with a soft cloth afterwards, but remember to replace sponges and loofahs often rather than clean them.
